Why Your Roof Has Black Streaks (And What Actually Removes Them)

Those streaks are alive

The dark stains running down your roof are a blue green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It arrives as airborne spores, lands on your roof, and settles in.

What it eats is the surprising part. Asphalt shingles are made with limestone filler as a bulking agent. The algae feeds on that limestone. So it is not sitting on top of your roof like dirt on a car. It is anchored into the shingle, consuming part of what the shingle is made of.

That is why it runs in streaks. Rain carries the colony down the slope, and it spreads in the direction the water travels. It is also why scrubbing does nothing and why the stains come back within weeks of a rinse.

Why Cincinnati roofs get hit hard

Three things drive it, and this region has all three.

• Humidity. Ohio River valley summers hold moisture. Algae needs damp to establish, and it gets plenty.
• Tree cover. Older neighborhoods like Hyde Park and Montgomery have mature canopy. Shade means a roof that never fully dries between rains.
• North facing slopes. Look at your own roof and you will usually see the streaks worst on the north side. It gets the least direct sun, so it stays wet longest.

If your neighbor's roof looks clean and yours does not, it is usually not age. It is exposure.

Why pressure washing a roof is a mistake

This is the part that costs people money. Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of ceramic granules bonded to the surface. Those granules are what block UV and keep the asphalt underneath from drying out and cracking.

High pressure blasts them off. You will see them wash into the gutters and collect at the bottom of the downspout, which is the clearest sign a roof was cleaned wrong. The roof looks better the day it is done and then ages fast, because you have stripped the sunscreen off it.

Most shingle manufacturers say the same thing in their warranty documents: no high pressure. A pressure washed roof can void coverage on a roof that still had years left.

What actually works

The correct method is a low pressure application, closer to a garden hose than a pressure washer, using a cleaning solution that kills the algae at the root rather than blasting it off the surface.

The solution does the work. Pressure does not. Because the algae is killed rather than scraped, it does not immediately re grow, and rain rinses the dead colony off over the following weeks. Some roofs look noticeably better within a day. Others keep improving for a month.

This is the same approach used on siding, and it is why the trade calls it soft washing rather than pressure washing. On a roof it is not a preference. It is the only method that does not damage the shingle.

How long until it comes back

Honestly, it will come back eventually. Spores are in the air and your roof still faces north and still sits under the same trees. What changes is the timeline. A properly treated roof typically stays clear for several years rather than several weeks.

Two things slow it down. Trimming branches that shade the roof helps it dry faster after rain. And if you ever re roof, shingles with copper granules resist algae, because copper is toxic to it. That is also why you rarely see streaks directly below a chimney flashing or a copper vent. The metal runoff keeps that strip clean.

When to have it looked at

If you can see streaking from the street, it is established. Waiting does not make it cheaper and it does not make it easier. It just gives the colony more time to feed on the shingle.
